A B O U T T H E P R O D U C T I O N THE STORY Unlike many Broadway shows of recent years, 110 IN THE SHADE tells a real story. Instead of contrived situations, vaudeville one-liners, and a plot built around one super-star performer, N. Richard Nash's play describes his characters' search for love and honesty through the dignity and humanity of believable people. The town of Three-Point, somewhere in the west just after the turn of the century, has been suffering from a devastating drought all summer. It is August and there is not relief in sight. There is no relief either for the Curry family The father, H.C., is troubled about the future of his children. Eldest son Noah sees facts flat on, and has no time for imagination or warmth. Daughter Lizzie is unconvincingly cheerful, approaching middle-age, and too honest and direct to trap a husband. Youngest son Jimmy seems doomed to a life of immaturity, puppy loves and irresponsibility. File, the town's sheriff, also has his troubles, but refuses to be open with himself or his friends. Into this beleaguered community, as if in answer to a prayer comes Bill Starbuck -- rainmaker! This itinerant con-man and bunko artist promises H. C. rain in 24 hours (for a substantial fee, of course!) and Starbuck's catalytic effect begins. ABOUT THE PRODUCITON When we decided to produce 110 IN THE SHADE at Ilion this year, we concluded, simultaneously, that it should be as much a student production as possible. This is what you will see this evening --- except for dramatic and musical direction this is entirely a student show. Our Ilion kids performed miracles in all areas of stage craft. Each department was headed by a student director running a crew of student assistants. It speaks well for them, the school, and especially their parents, that they have delivered such professional results. It also reminds us how talented and promising our young people really are! Please refrain from taking pictures during the performance.
THE AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE is a private, non-profit, non-sectarian organization whose purpose is to promote better understanding among people through international scholarships. students between the ages of 16 and 18 spend a year or a summer participating in the life of their host communities. FOUNDED IN 1914 as a volunteer ambulance service, its members were active in both World Wars. After World War II, the drivers felt a great need for strengthening the bonds between nations. In 1947, AFS brought 52 students from 11 nations to the U.S. Since then, a two-fold program has brought 39, 816 students from 60 countries to the U. S. while 20,539 American students have gone to nations on six continents. The Ilion chapter, since its founding in 1960, has hosted students from nine countries, five Ilion students have gone abroad under the program and we hope to send two in 1973. YOU CAN HELP by (1) becoming an active member of the local chapter as an individual or representative of your group; (2) inviting our current returnee or our foreign student to speak for your organization; (3) including our foreign student in your special events (4) inviting her to share a family activity of an evening in your home; (5) offering to become a host family for a foreign student; (6) giving us the opportunity to discuss the AFS program with your group. Finally, there is a continuing need for money to carry out this program. Contributions on an annual basis by individuals or groups help provide continuity and eliminate the need for annual appeals.
