Man found guilty of killing former Ilion woman - By Staff Reporter
A jury in the state of Maryland found a man guilty Thursday in the killing of a former Ilion woman. Ryan Matthias, 44, of Charlotte, North Carolina, was found guilty of first- and second-degree murder, first-degree assault and use of a handgun in a crime of violence, after about three hours of deliberations. All four charges are felonies, said T. Wayne Kirwan, public information officer for the Howard County State's Attorney's Office. Matthias repeatedly shot his former girlfriend, Deborah Massocco Castellano, outside her apartment in Columbia, Maryland, on May 4, 2013. In previous court testimony, prosecutors told jurors that Matthias stalked his former girlfriend only days before killing her. The two met online through a social network website before Matthias moved from North Carolina to live with Castellano in Herkimer. When the relationship turned sour, Matthias helped Castellano - who worked at Turning Stone Resort Casino - move to Maryland for a better job with Maryland Live Casino. Matthias faces life in prison when he is sentenced Friday, July 25.
