Leo J. Sammon Jr. Ilion High Principal Obituary
ILION - Leo J. Sammon Jr., 49, of 5 Hall St , principal at Ilion High School, died yesterday in Mohawk Valley General Hospital. Mr Sammon was stricken at the high school track while jogging, Cause of death has not yet been determined. An autopsy has been scheduled today by a pathologist. He was born Feb. 26, 1925 in Pittsfield, Mass., the son of Leo Joseph and Christine Scheufler Sammon. He married Audrey Harsh on Dec. 19, 1953 on Long Island. Mr. Sammon attended high school in Pittsfield and graduated from Syracuse University with a B.S. and M.S. Degree. He served 31 months in the Air Force as a first lieutenant He was on the staff at Hudson High School from 1953 to 1956 when he transferred to Herkimer High School. A resident of Ilion since 1956, Mr. Sammon had been affiliated with the Ilion School System since 1957 and had been principal of the Ilion Junior-Senior High School since 1960. He was a member of the rowing team at Syracuse University for four years and served as captain in 1951. In Hudson, he sang with the Hendrick Hudson male chorus. He has coached football and basketball and has served as director of boys and girls camps. He was a past state chairman of Resolution Commission of School Administration Association of New York, a member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals; a past member of the United Fund Executive Committee, and the Boy Scout Executive Committee, General Herkimer Council. He was also a past member of the Board of Trustees of the First United Methodist Church, of which he was a member. He was a member of the Conversation Club of Ilion and the Herkimer County Principal's Association. Mr. Sammon is survived by his widow, one daughter, Deborah and a son, Leo III, at home; one brother, Herbert Sammon, of Pittsfield and a sister, Mrs. Charles (Marjorie) Franback. Pittsfield. The funeral will be at 10 a. m. Thursday from the Ilion United Methodist Church. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Pittsfield Cemetery, Pittsfield, Mass. Calling hours at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, Dion, will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 tomorrow and Wednesday.
