SUNDAY WAS THE big day for graduating seniors at the Ilion Central High School as 181 received their degrees. Taking top honors in the 1971 class were Alice Comins (center), valedictorian: and Katherine Rooke, salutatorian. Diplomas and awards were presented to the students by Leo J. Sammon Jr., principal, here shown congratulating Miss Commins.

REGENTS SCHOLARSHIP winners at Ilion Central High School got together one last time Sunday just before they received their diplomas at commencement exercises at the school. ILION - Diplomas were presented to 181 graduates of Ilion High School Sunday afternoon, during commencement ceremonies in the high school auditorium.

Many scholarships and commencement awards were presented to the graduates during the exercises. Short addresses were given by Alice Commins, valedictorian, and Katherine Rooke, salutatorian.

Principal Leo Sammon Jr. presented commencement awards, Schools Supt. James Dunn the scholarships and Russell Putnam, president. Board of Education awarded the diplomas.

The Scholarships

Scholarships were: Earl Parry Watkin scholarship, given by Ilion Teachers Association to person entering teaching, a $200 grant yearly for four years, Denise Wengert.

I. Clark Seamans scholarship to person entering either Syracuse University or Utica College of Syracuse University, $300, Sharon Reynolds.

Clayton Memorial scholarship presented by family of Floyd and Emma Clayton, given to person proficient in math and science, $200, Gregory Kubala.

Beta Chi Rho nursing scholarship, for student entering nurse training, $100, Iva Gage.

Burton T. Seymour Memorial Scholarship, given by Ilion firefighters, $100, Ronald Polley.

Ilion Jaycee-Jayncee Scholarship, given in memory of Mrs. Sarah Dacquino Simmonette and children, $100, Denise Sorenson.

Ilion Savings & Loan Scholarship to student showing ability in the business field, $100, Kathleen Vivlamore.

Daniel M. Stone Memorial Scholarship presented by his family to student entering a one or two year institution of higher learning who has shown citizenship and service in both school and community, $50. Michael Bouck.

Community College Scholarship, awarded to two persons attending a two-year community college, presented by Mr. and Mrs. George E. Anderson, $50, Coleen Manion, and $50, Barbara Tomei.

I. Clark Seaman scholarship, for one year to person entering either Syracuse U. or Utica College, $300, to Debra Pierce.

P.T.O. Scholarship to person accepted at an accredited four year institution and planning to be a teacher, Carol Palmer.

Ilion Community Club Scholarship to deserving senior who has not won any other scholarship, $150, David Grygiel.

Antionette Tisci Memorial Scholarship, to student pursuing a career in nursing or medical technology, given by Vito and family, $100, Iva Gage.

Commencement Awards

Commencement awards were:

Judith Abeline, four years, savings bond given by Marine Midland Bank: math & science, eight units, second prize, $10; co-recipient of English term paper prize given to persons other than valedictorian and salutatorian by Ilion Historical Club, $15; co-recipient of publications award given by Mirror staff in memory of Linda Braybrook, class of '63, $10.

Alice Comins, Earl Parry Watkin memorial prize for valedictorian, $25: John Guy Prindle memorial prize in science, second prize, $5; World History 10th year award, given by Miss Barbara Schwartz in memory of her mother, Mrs. Anna Schwartz, $5; History Four Year Award, the Cornelia Nagle prize, given by Mrs. Abram.

Katherine Rooke, school prize for salutatorian, $20: Loretta 0. Douglas award given by Ilion Alumni Assn. for outstanding work in English, $50: Northside Athletic Club award to deserving girl, $10.

Gregory Kubala, math & science, eight units, first prize, $10; John Guy Prindle Memorial Prize in science, first prize, $10; Rensselaer math & science medal.

Sandra Kencharek, VFW Post 502 prize for progress for a girl, $10; same prize, Paula March: Michael Bouck, VFW Post 502 prize for progress for a boy $10: same prize, Robert Bennett; Ginnie Ward, VFW Post 502 prize for auxiliary; same prize, Owen Doolen.

Grace Bouton, the Ilion Police Benevolent Assn. award for most progress by a girl through her individual effort and perseverance, $10; Ilion PBA award to a boy for same reason, John Vandawalker, $10.

Sharon Reynolds, Burton T. Seymour memorial prize for service, $25; Lynn Bluett, William & Nettie Parker prize in music or science from trust established by William S. Parker, $45; John Leniek, art three year award, $10; David Grygiel, mechanical drawing prize, $10.

Also, Kathleen Vivlamore, proficiency in secretarial practice award $10; also medal from Powellson Institute; Theresa Lane, office practice and I typing award given by the Business and Professional Women's Club, $10: Mary Manley, co-recipient of the English term paper prize given to person other than valedictorian or salutatorian by Historical Club of Ilion, $15.

Also, Denise Sorenson, English award for progress and good citizenship, in honor of retired English teacher. Mrs. Elizabeth Marston, given by Mr. and Mrs. John Gird, $10; co-recipient of the speech arts school prize, $5; Mary Monohan, American History award given to student showing outstanding achievement in history program, given by Dr. and Mrs. Arthur Applegate in memory of Mrs. Kathleen Withington, $10.

Homemaking Award

Also, Janice Merrick, homemaking three year award, given by General Herkimer County Food Service Association, $5; Danny Travis, industrial arts and vocational shop, three years $10; Blanche Stuart, Spanish three year award, $10; Larry Mead, special service award for outstanding service to the school, given by Mid-York Racom Club, $25.

Also, Carol Palmer, Zonta Club, of Herkimer prize for girl showing most growth in school service and citizenship, $25 livings bond; Patricia Baker, co-recipient of speech arts school prize, $5; Dennis Maxfield, co-recipient of publications award given by Mirror staff in memory of Linda Braybook of class of 1963: Iva Gage, Women of the Moose prize for nurses training, $10; Carl Marhaver, Northside Athletic Club award to a deserving boy, $10.

Also, Timothy Carter, Ilion Fish & Game Club award presented to senior boy or girl planning to enter conservation or ecology, $25; Diane Southwick, St. Augustine's Guild of St. Augustine's Church in Ilion award to girl exemplifying high moral character, in memory of Mrs Kathleen Withington, $25; Stuart Strife, Citizenship Prize to student exemplifying characteristics of good citizenship, given by Mohawk Valley Lodge of B'nai B'rith, $10.

Donors of sums of money not specifically designated for special prizes, but to be used at the discretion of the principal and awards committee for outstanding achievement in numerous special areas are: Oneida National Bank, $75; Remington Arms Co., $35; Philia Charity Sorority, $15; Knights of Columbus, $10; Ilion Lodge, $5.
