173 Ilion Seniors Get Diplomas at Ceremonies

ILION - Graduation ceremonies for 173 Ilion High School seniors, including presentation diplomas and awarding of prizes, were conducted yesterday afternoon in the school auditorium.

Dr. Herbert F. Johnson, associate commissioner of education, State Education Dept., was the speaker. He addressed the graduates on the topic "Perspectives On Life." Janet Keddell, salutatorian, spoke on the theme "The Road Not Taken," and James Patrei, valedictorian spoke on "Competition in Today's World."

Diplomas were presented by Dr. James S. Anderson, president, Board of Education, and Schools Supt. George E. Anderson.

Leo J. Sammon, Jr., principal, awarded prizes. Scholarship winners were as follows: Frances DeLong, Nancy Whitney, the Earl Parry Watkin scholarship each $400;
Gertrude Lucey, I. Clark Seamons scholarship, $300;
James Patrei, income from Clayton Memorial scholarship;
Susan Brynes, Beta Chi Rho nursing scholarship, $100.

Richard Janis, Varsity Club scholarship in memory of Richard N. Adams, $100;
Michael Paestella, Leo B. Ahern Memorial scholarship, $100;
Susan Byrnes, American Legion Auxiliary nursing scholarship, $100;
Linda Ladd, Ilion Jaycee-Janycee scholarship, $100;
Timothy O'Connor, Barbara Callahan, Gary Ayers, Frances DeLong, Stewart Roberson, Susan Byrnes, Hoad Memorial Award Trust Fund scholarship.

Earl Watkin Memorial Prize for valedictorian, $20;
mathematics five years, $10;
Latin four years, $10;
highest average in physics and RPI Medal for science achievement;

John Guy Prindle Memorial Prize in science, first prize, $10.
