Ilion High Informative By Bill Cornell and Don Keddell - November 9, 1963

Black replaced gold and brown Thursday and Friday as the Ilion High School colors, when the 1963 Homecoming Weekend was started with a two-day period of mourning for the rival Herkimer football team which will meet the Bombers today on the Ilion field.

During the mourning the students wore black arm bands and black clothes, and the walls were papered with "Ilion Beat Herkimer" posters.

A pep rally, a bonfire, a parade to the football game, the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen, and a Homecoming dance were planned for the weekend's festivities. Joanne Urtz and Paul Morris were the general chairmen in charge of the plans for the weekend. Diana Withington, Mary Jean McGrath, Linda-Jo Caple, Cheryl Miller, Pat Urtz, Charlie Bennett and Betsy Morris were the chairmen heading the various Homecoming committees.

Carol Klippel is the general chairman of the annual Senior Ball, "Snowflake Fantasy," to be held in the boys gymnasium on Dec. 21. Joan Snedeker and Mary Ladd will head the throne committee, and Lois Hofstra and Sue Gogol will be in charge of the entrance. Dave Wells will be chairman of the refreshments committee. The general decorations will be under the direction of Sue Burns, Linda-Joe Caple, and Pam Danten. Nancy Frosch and Janet Frezza will direct the program committee. John Burkhart will be in charge of publicity, while Dick Hall will head the invitations committee.

A trip was made to the Delhi Agricultural and Technological Institute by nine seniors on Oct. 31. Those who made the trip were Fran Spatol, Anne Crosset, Carole Smith, Mary Carol Bentley, Pat Donahue, Karen Pederson, Jack Fitzer, John Kegel and Jim Yule.

The Ilion Golden Bombers have lost their last two games. Last week at Norwich, Ilion was downed by the Norwich squad 24-0. A week earlier the Bombers lost to the Mohawk eleven 19-0.

Today Ilion will be invaded by its traditional rivals, the Herkimer Magicians. Hopes and spirits are running high as the rivals clash in what is the biggest game of the season for the two schools.

The Ilion High harriers will represent Section III in the intersectionals of the third consecutive year. The contest will take place this year at Bear Mountain Park in the Catskills. Last Saturday, Terry Sweeney set a new course record at the Section III Class B meet In Solvay, breaking the previous record by one minute and thirty-nine seconds. Jack Sweeney finished second. Paul Dodge sixth, Jim Yule 13th and Dave Tresohlavy 14th. Won placed first, Cazenovia second, and Lowville third.

The Ilion Junior Varsity football squad finished its season on Nov. 1 with a close 2-0 victory over Proctor. The victory brought team's season record to 3-2. The Freshman football season dosed with a 4-2 won-lost record. The freshmen eleven defeated the Proctor Panthers last Saturday by the close margin of 21-20 in their last game.

A varsity hockey team will be started this year in Ilion under direction of David Exley. The team will be competing against teams from Clinton, Rome, Whitesboro, and New Hartford in the Central New York Scholastic Hockey League. Ilion's season will start on Jan. 11 at Russell Park with a game against New Hartford.
