97 Seniors Graduate At Ilion Commencement Ilion - The dangers of a tottering civilization were sounded last night before 97 graduates of Ilion High School who received diplomas and scholarship awards at their commencements in the Capitol Theater. Donald V. Hock, speaker, Allentown, Pa., told the young people they were graduating in "Year Two of the Atomic Era." He spoke on "Convictions and Faith, and warned the boys and girls, "You are a part of a civilization which in your time must either change or die." Thomas R. Morris, Board of Education vice president, with Earl P. Watkin, superintendent, presented the diplomas in the absence of Mrs. Everett V. Mack, president, who is ill. Mr. Morris handed a diploma to his son, Donald, his seventh boy to graduate from Ilion High. The Rev. Ernest Pugh, rector of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, read the invocation and gave the benediction. Miss Violetta Ann Newton, valedictorian, presented as her theme, "Career Calls." The salutatory, based on the heritage of opportunity, was given by Miss Mary Lupinski.
Special Music Music was; furnished by the, Ilion School orchestra under direction of Robert George Hubbell. Marion Baker also conducted Marian Green led the processional, Samuel H. Nile rendered a trumpet sole. The girls' sextet sang: Grace Lever. Mary Bump, Barbara Merchin, Patricia Backman, Marilyn Waters and Ann Newton. J. G. Prindle, school principal awarded these prizes: English - First, Violetta A. Newton; second, Mary Lupinski. Mathematics - first, Sarah Davis; second, Sam Nile. Social studies, 3 years - Violetta Newton. DAR Good Citizenship - Violetta Newton; American History - Sarah Davis. Latin - first, Violetta Newton; second, Patricia Murphy. Modern language - first, Grace Lever; second, Geraldine Moran. Bausch & Lomb medal - first Sam Nile; second, Felix Scanlon. Becker College pin - Mary Lupinski; Shorthand II - Mary Lupinski: Office Practice - Arlene Thomas; Industrial Arts - Ward Donahue; Mechanical drawing - Edward Schafer: Mack Memorial prize - Sam Nile. RPI medal - Sam Nile; Momberger Memorial - Calvin Conover; Music Marion Baker; Art Mary Corwin, Home Economics - Virginia Curley; Speech - Thomas Kibbe; Kent Memorial placque - Sara Nile; Lever Cup - LeRoy Outtrim; Peter's prize Violetta Newton and Harry Stalev
