Two Ilion Boys Given School's Sport Awards

Ilion - Robert Day, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Day, 86 S. Fifth Ave., who entered the armed forces shortly after graduation from Ilion High School in January, was awarded the Rocky Cramer Memorial Trophy yesterday at the last assembly of the year, although he was not present to accept it.

The "unsung hero" athletics award went to a junior, Theodore Armstrong, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Armstrong, 3 Coleman Pl. J. Guy Prindle, principal, made the presentations after he and Earl P. Watkin, school superintendent, addressed the assembly.

Trophies Bear Names

The trophies are not given for permanent possession, but kept in the school trophy case with the recipient's name inscribed thereon. A medal signifying the "unsung hero" award will be presented to Armstrong at commencement on June 26. Rules require the winner to be a member of one or more athletic squads during the year. Selection is based on sportsmanship, perseverance, maintenance of training rules, and satisfactory work. The purpose is to raise the level of sportsmanship and reward the boy whose true value, efforts and loyalty have been overlooked. Candidates for the award were first chosen by the teams, coaches, Prindle and the athletic director. The final selection was made by the trophy committee of the Varsity Club, the principal and athletic director from ten names heading the list.

Honors Crash Victim

The Rocky Cramer award for outstanding sport leadership has been presented for the past four years in memory of a football star and all-around athlete who was killed during his senior year in an automobile accident.

The recipient must be a graduated senior; have won a varsity letter in a major sport; attained satisfactory marks in three subjects his last year; have aptitude in leadership as well as outstanding ability in physical education activities such as apparatus work, body building games; and must have participated in two intramural sports in addition to living up to training rules
