Unique Features Mark 1945 School Commencement Program

Commencement exercises of the 1945 graduating class of the Ilion High School, Tuesday night were made distinctive by she graduates themselves. Nine of the class members were unable to be present because they are serving; in the armed forces. The prizes, which are given annually were well distributed among all she boys and girls, where they have so often been bunched in the past The class also boasted two sets twins receiving some of the scholastic awards.

Alfred Morris, representing the class members, gave 25 silver dollars to John Guy Prindle, who is rounding out 25 years of service as principal of the school. Rome D. Worden, president of the Board of Education, presented Mr. Prindle with a pen and pencil set and a "diploma" for his years of service, saying that "he has earned the love, respect and gratitude of citizens, faculty and students as principal of the school and as a citizen of the community."

Cameron Beck, director of Public Relations for National Fireworks Inc., and for Clark Babbitt Industries, Inc., spoke to the graduates, telling them that they, the youth of the nation, are the ones who must make this world of ours a success.

He told them not work just for what they can get personally, but to work for a cause, pom ting out that so many visions of tomorrow are lost by persons grabbing all they can today. "Selfishness can kill a nation as well as an individual" he said.

He advised the students to continue their educations in order to maintain their places in the world, saying "You must know more than the other fellow or he will crowd you out." He declared that they must work hard for what they achieve and named three qualities of a good leader as being character, intelligence, and willingness to work.

Mr. Beck closed his speech with four suggestions for a successful future. He. told the graduates that they must have a plan for their lives, a purpose, a passion for right living, and perseverance.

The high school band under the direction of Frederick Fay Swift, played "Coronation March" from "The Prophet" while the sailors marched into the, theater. Both the choir and band gave several selections during the program. Invocations and benedictions were given by the Rev. Gerald Millet, assistant pastor of Annunciation Church. Miss Mary Horan, salutatorian spoke on "America - Our Challenge" and Miss Marian Ray gave the valedictory "America - Our Future.

Mr. Prindle awarded the prizes as follows;

English, four years, Marion Ray, Paul Bouck; mathematics, three units, Charles Paddock, Alfred Morris; history, three years, Hugh Griffith and Stuart Cramer; Latin, three years, Paul Pilson, Mary Horan; modern language, threei years, Margaret Ray, Joan Billington; science three years, Marion Ray, Alfred Morris; commercial, three years Doris Lyon, Shirley Eckler; industrial art. three years, Robert Day, John Hilliard.

Also music, Sidney Partington; art, Barbara Schwartz; home economics, Shirley Roe; shorthand, Thelma Denton; mechanics, David Loftus; American history, Barbara Schwartz; dramatics, Phyllis Eckler; commercial, Doris Lyon; RPI for five units of science and. mathematics, Marion Ray; highest average in music courses and activities, Charles Paddock; the Lever cup for the highest number of points in athletics and scholarship, Milton Hess.

Awards of $10 given by Ralph Peters in memory of Madeline Peters, were presented to Mary Stokes and Alfred Morris for the best all around good citizenship. A prize of $2.50 in memory of Lt. William Momberger was presented to Roland McClean for the best work in preflight training.

The diplomas were presented to the graduates by Rome D. Worden, president of the Board of Education, arid Earl D. Watkin, superintendent.

The boys in service who were not present to receive their diplomas are: Duane Chapin, JameB Coman, Samule Costanza, Robert Day, Geo. Schulz, Gerald Windsor, John Braren, Van Davis and Sidney Partington, who had been called to report for Navy duty Tuesday morning.
