Schulz, Ilion High School Valedictorian, Awarded 8-week South American Trip

Scholarships to Emerson And Carlton Colleges Reported Awarded

Average American Boy

Warren Schulz, Ilion High school senior will have the opportunity to take an eight weeks trip to South America this summer as the guest of the League of Nations Association. He earned the award by submitting the best paper in a nation-wide contest conducted by the Association's Educational Committee last April 4th.

Schultz, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Schulz, Benedict Ave., will be valedictorian of the June graduating class here, and will graduate with the highest average ever attained by a student at the school. School officials announced last week that his average was 96.02.

Dr. Edgar J. Fisher, chairman of the committee which made the award stated that young Schulz seems to be an all-around boy. He goes in for tennis, skiing, swimming, debating, school dramatics, is an active Boy Scout, editor of the "Golden Quill" the school paper, delivers daily papers and still finds time to win the highest average in the school in his work in history, Dr. Fisher stated.

Young Schulz won the third prize in the student contest last year, and in 1938, Donald Watkin son of Dr. and Mrs. Earl P. Watkin, John St., won first prize in a similar contest conducted by the Association at that time. Watkin's father is superintendent of schools in Ilion.

Two weeks ago Schulz was awarded second prize in an essay contest conducted by the Herkimer County American Legion, and last year attended Boys' State in Syracuse as representative of Herkimer county, where he rose to the post tion of Supreme Court Justice.

Dr. Fisher stated that the most outstanding part of Schulz's paper was as follows: "It was said after the world war that we won the war and lost peace. We failed to realize our true interest in, and responsibility for, the rest of toe world. We have learned however by the serious consequences of events between 1930 and 1941 that America is a part of the world in every way. Therefore it is quite reasonable to believe that we will do our utmost after the war to establish a just and lasting peace - a flexible, active organization able to meet changing conditions in the world."

Young Schulz is well liked by both the student body and the faculty, and seems quite undisturbed by all the honors he has earned during his four years in High school. He stated that while he had hoped that he would do better than last year, he was surprised when told he had won first place in the contest which attracted students from over 1,000 schools in all parts of the country. He added that both Mr. Prindle, principal of the school, and Miss Ruth Gordon, his history teacher, deserved most of the credit.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Schulz said that while he is highly elated at having won the award, he has little to say on the matter as he keeps his own counsel, which has been a trait of his since he was a baby.

After graduation from high school Warren hopes to enter Hamilton College, and take the social studies course, and later, if possible, enter the diplomatic service which has always attracted him.
