Trophy to Be Awarded 'Unsung Hero' Athlete Photo caption - The trophy held by Paul Kinney, Varsity Club trophy chairman, will be awarded to the "unsung hero" athlete of Ilion High School in June if the Board of Education approves. Harold Walrath, left, club president, and J. Guy Prindle, school principal, inspect it also. Ilion High Offered Trophy Of Modernistic Design Ilion - The new high school "unsung hero" trophy will rival all of the other trophies in the school case because of its outstanding difference - modernistic design. The Varsity Club last week received a cream colored based trophy on which was a bronze figure. Its gold is in a plaque on which the unsung hero's name will be engraved, and on the modeled sides. The trophy will be given in the school, provided the Board of Education accepts it. The board must act upon the acceptance under rules preventing acceptance of gifts in the school system unless the board passes upon them. The approval is anticipated Tuesday night, at the next board meeting. The Varsity Club, a group of graduate letter men from the school, decided during the winter that they should honor the boys who give their time to athletics and are outstanding in sportsmanship and yet might not get an award because their scholarship was not the highest. Rules Being Revised The result was the trophy. Now the rules are being revised which will allow the name inscription and the award of a medal to the boy at commencement. The rules, as drawn now, allow selection of any boy who has earned his letter and specifically refer extra credit for a major sportsman. The cup does not replace but .... The Lever Cup is given to the athlete with the high scholarship mark. The new award could go to the same person but it probably will be to some other one. In Principal's Office He told Walrath, president of the club, and Paul Kinney, trophy committee chairman, left in trophy of the office of J. Guy Prindle, principal, pending its formal approval. They have yet to select the type of medal appropriate to go with it. The new trophy measures 26 inches in height, including the 12 inch base with a 12-inch figure atop. It will be shown publicly later.
