Albert W. Schneider A Candidate for District Attorney Post in Fall Election

Announcement was made today of the intention of Albert W. Schneider of Ilion to seek the Republican nomination as candidate for District Attorney of Herkimer County in the fall primary election.

Mr. Schneider is a native son of Herkimer County, having been born in Ilion in 1908. He graduated from Ilion High School in 1925 and in the fall of 1928 he entered the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, where he completed his pre-law course of study and entered Albany Law School (Union University) in 1930, receiving the degree of Bachelor of Laws in 1933. In July of that year he became associated in the practice of law with the firm of Schmidt and Peterson, comprised of Frank A. Schmidt and Carl W. Peterson, now Herkimer County Judge and Surrogate.

In 1938 he became Village Attorney for the Village of Ilion, which position he held until he entered the service. As Village Attorney he received invaluable experience in municipal affairs and government and successfully prosecuted and defended actions and claims against the Village. During this period he also prosecuted all criminal actions in which the Village was complainant.

In March 1943 Mr. Schneider was inducted into the United States Army and in July of 1944 received a commission as Second Lieutenant in the Judge Advocate General's Department, the legal branch of the army. During his service in the C. B. I. Theater of War, he was appointed Trial Judge Advocate in charge of all criminal prosecutions in northern India and part of Burma and successfully prosecuted co and the Dutch East Indies. The many cases including two murder charges and several manslaughter, rape, larceny and robbery charges. While overseas he was promoted to the rank of Captain and was later assigned to War Crimes work and made Chief of War Crimes Investigations in the South-East Asia Command, comprising Burma, Siam, French Indo-China, Malaya, Bornwork involved investigation, preparation and prosecution of cases against American prisoners of war.

Hundreds of charges were investigated and trials held in Rangoon and Singapore, resulting in the conviction of approximately 25 major war criminals, many receiving death sentences.

Mr. Schneider was discharged from the service November 1st, 1946 and has since been engaged in the practice of law in Ilion as one of the members of the firm of Schmidt and Schneider, and again served as Village Attorney until March of this year.

Before and since his return, Mr. Schneider has been actively identified with civic interest and organizations in Ilion. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross and is now a member of the Board of Directors of the Ilion Hospital, and the Ilion Cemetery Association. He Is also a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Ilion Volunteer Firemen, the Ilion Fish and Game Club, Elk's Club, Ilion Community Club and a Past Master of Ilion Masonic Lodge. Mr. Schneider is also a member of the Herkimer County Bar Association and the New York State Bar Association, and has been a member of the Official Board of the Ilion Methodist Church, for the past ten years.

Mr. Schneider is married and has one child, Robert Allen Schneider, aged eight months.

Mr. Schneider believes himself well qualified for the office of District Attorney of Herkimer County by reason of his extensive civil and criminal both in and out of the Army.
