Ilion Citizen IHS Graduates 1916

The Auditorium of The High School Was Filled to Capacity Tuesday Evening to Witness the Final Appearance of The Class of 1916 - Superintendent Schwartz Paid Fine Tribute to Class

Once more Ilion High School has given its quota of young men and young women to larger university of the world and the alma matter cannot but feel that under its supervision the class which was graduated will make a high mark in their life work. And the class records show that the members of the class are sure of being successful if they maintain those records in the future. At the commencement exercise held in the auditorium of the high school Tuesday evening superintend of Public Schools Schwartz gave statistics which show that the class is not an ordinary one. The class maintained the high average through the four years of its high school career of 83.3. The Regents mark for the same period of time was 78.1. Miss Jessie Remington was awarded the highest honors of the class, that of valedictorian, with the exceedingly high average of 94.5, and Miss Jean Reese was with the average of 92.2. Certainly, these records bring honor to Ilion High School. E. Marell Sturges was given honorable mention for his essay on "Alexander Hamilton, from 1772 to 1785; his life and service to our country." Mr. Sturges' essay was placed in competition with schools throughout the State. That Mr. Sturges was successful in obtaining such high honors speaks high of his literary ability.
