Carney, Here To See Father, Dies at Ellis Joseph W. Carney, 58, of New York city, former assistant manager of Standard Oil Co. in China, died at Ellis hospital yesterday. On his way to visit his 90-year old father, Patrick J. Carney of 14 Eagle street Monday, Mr. Carney suffered a cerebral hemorrhage on Brandywine avenue near State street. He was taken to the hospital in the Mercy ambulance. Henry Smith, driver of the ambulance, said Carney apparently had just alighted from a bus when stricken. He was lying against a snow bank when the ambulance arrived and an unidentified man was attempting to assist him. Mr. Carney had been associated with Standard Oil Co. for 30 years joining the organization as assistant manager of a small branch in China. While serving as assistant manager of all company organizations in that country, he was stationed in Shanghai. He retired in 1941 and during the war served with the war bonds division of the treasurer's department and was executive secretary of the foreign operations commission of the petroleum administration for war. Born in Ilion, Mr. Carney was graduated from Cornell University in 1910. He resided at 1225 Park Avenue, New York City. In addition to his father, Mr. Carney is survived by his wife, Mrs. Leona A. Carney of New York City, four daughters, Mrs. A. A. Kosinski of Albany and Mrs. Vincent Ryan, Miss Leona Carney and Mrs. Warren Wallace, all of New York City, two sisters, Miss Anna Carney and Miss Mary CArney , both of Schenectady, and one brother J. E. Carney of Ilion. Funeral Services will be held Friday at 9 a.m. at the Eagle street residence and at 9:30 o'clock at St. Luke's Church. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
