Rites at Ilion For Dr. Diss

ILION - Services will be conducted at 2 p. m. Thursday from the Whiter Funeral Home for Dr. Charles Joseph Diss, 72, who practiced medicine in this village for more than 50 years.

Dr. Diss was a native of Ilion and was graduated from the old Ilion Academy in 1897. He received his license in 1901 and opened and office in the Redway Block. He was trolley surgeon for 10 years, established the first aid department in the Library Bureau of Remington Rand and, during World War I, was in charge of accident cases at Remington Arms.

He was active in the establishment of the Ilion Hospital and had the distinction of treating the first patient in that institution. During the influenza epidemic of 1918, he helped set up a Red Cross Hospital in the former Calder home. He also examined draftees in both World Wars.

In 1951, Dr. Diss was honored by the New York State Medical Society for 50 years in medical service. He wa a member of the American Medical Association, Medical Society of New York, Herkimer County Medical Society, Utica Academy of Medicine.

He was also a member of Ilion Masonic Lodge, Ilion Odd Fellows, Ilion Fish and Game Club, Ilion Community Club and the Conservation Club.

He leaves his wife, the former Constance F. Barker and a cousin, D. B. Diss of Short Hills.
