Death Takes Miss Russell In Woodgate

ILION - Miss Rae M. Russell, 71, 24 John St., prominent Ilion churchwoman and former West Hill School teacher, died unexpectedly June 7, 1948, at her Summer home "Idlewhile," White Lake, Woodgate, where she has spent her Summers for more than 50 years.

Miss Russell, daughter of Samuel T. and Sophia Jones Russell, was born in Ilion Sept. 14, 1876. She was a graduate of Ilion High School class of 1894, and of a kindergarten school in Utica.

She taught for several years at West Hill School here, retiring in 1912 when her family moved to Boston where her father was president of the Remington Rand Library Bureau. They lived there for several years and then returned to Ilion where Miss Russell had since made her home, residing with Mrs. F. W. Carpenter, 24 John St.

Miss Russell was a member of the Mohawk Valley Chapter DAR, the Ilion Travelers Club, the Shakespeare Club, and the Methodist Church and its organizations. The organ in the church was the gift of Miss Russell and her family in memory of her mother.

One of the founders of the Woodgate Free Library, Miss Russell for a number of years had been secretary of the Woodgate Civic Association. During the Summer, she was active in the Woodgate Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are a sister, Miss Helen Russell, librarian of the State Teachers College, West Chester, Pa.; a brother, the Rev. Joseph J. Russell, pastor of the Congregational Church, Holbrook, Mass., and several cousins.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow from the Methodist-Episcopal Church with the Rev. L. D. Peale officiating. Internment will be in Armory Hill Cemetery.
