Death Removes Ilion Attorney, Village Leader
Ilion - Arleigh D. Richardson, 81, of 70 John St., oldest member of Herkimer County Bar Association, former district attorney and for 25 years an Ilion school board member, died yesterday in Ilion Hospital.
Richardson was district attorney from 1892 to 1895 and was president of the school board when the Ilion High School was built. He served six years on the State Hospital Commission and for several years as village attorney.
Following in the law office which his father opened more than threequarters of a century ago, Richardson held many responsible posts. He had been attorney for and a director of the Ilion National Bank & Trust Co., the Manufacturers' National Bank, the former Remington Typewriter Co., and the Adirondack League Club.
Graduated From Yale
Born in Frankfort, Aug. 7, 1864, a son of Thomas and Harriet Dygert Richardson, he came to Ilion with his family when quite young and was graduated from the old Morgan St. school in 1882 and from Yale University in 1886. He studied law in his father's office and in 1889 was admitted to the bar.
On Dec. 31, 1890, he married the former Alice Hyde Shepard, daughrr of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Shepard, members of an old Ilion family.
An enthusiastic hunter and fisherman, he was a member of the Adirondack Club. He attended the Episcopal Church.
Rites on Thursday
Besides his wife he leaves one daughter, Mrs. George B. Thurston, Middletown, Conn.; one son, A. D. Richardson, Jr., Columbus, Ohio; three sisters, Dr. Jennie Richardson president of the Women;s Associate Board of the Ilion Hospital, Miss Carrie Richardson, honorary president of the Library board; Mrs. Lillian Shepherd, all of 317 W. Main St., and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p. m. Thursday from Richardson Memorial Chapel in Armory Hill cemetery which Mr. Richardson's mother erected, on Jan. 3, 1906. before her death. The Rev. L. R. Benson will officiate. Interment will be in Armory Hill. Herkimer County Bar Association members will meet at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Memorial Chapel according to George Fiesinger, president.
