Beloved Woman Called by Death

Mrs. John Hoefler Had Devoted Her Life to Service for Others.

Ilion, June 8 - Ilion lost a highly honorable and worthy citizen in the death of Mrs. John Hoefler, which occurred at her home on West Main street yesterday afternoon, following a long period of illness. Mrs. Hoefler was the daughter of Henry and Catharine Eller, was born February 14, 1836. at Hortzzodum, Hesse Nassau, Germany. Mrs. Hoefler came to this country with her parents when a year old and resided in Utica up to her marriage which occurred July 13, 1854. Mrs. Hoefler took up her residence in Ilion in 1855, where Mr. Hoefler became associated with the Remington industries, in which he played a prominent part up to the time of his death, which occurred in 1905. During 40 of the 63 years of her residence in Ilion, she resided in the old Hoefler home at the corner of Main street and Hoefler avenue. It was Mrs. Hoefler's intention to leave her home and grounds to the village of Ilion for a park, as a memorial, but when the need of the property for an enlargement of the Arms plant became apparent. Mrs. Hoefler yielded to the greater interests of the community and gave up her home.

Mrs. Hoefler's life was one that was Christian like in every sense. She was possessed of a wonderful ability to do things that would be of help and benefit to others and for a great many years had been a factor in the promotion of Ilion's welfare. She preferred to live a quiet home life and her family was the object of her greatest devotion. Her life was marked with beautiful traits and her generous and kindly acts made her loved and endeared to all who knew her and her passing removes another of the true and staunch citizens.

She was a most devoted member of the Methodist Church, which she was always greatly interested in. Her late husband, John Hoefler, was one of Ilion's most prominent and influential cltizens.

Surviving are Mrs. E. M. Draper. Pasadena, Cal.; Mrs. Carver Remington, San Antonio, Tex.; William H. Hoefler, Denver, Col.; John L. Hoefler, Littleton. Col.; Mrs. Charles C. Brill, Ilion; Charles G. Hoefler, Sauquoit; Frank S. Hoefler, Ilion and Philo R. Hoefler, Pasadena. Cal. Grandchildren surviving are: Mrs. F. M. Golden, San Antonio. Tex.; Marion E. Brill, Ilion; John R. and Arleigh Hoefler, Littleton. Col., and Theodore Hoefler, Sauquoit; great-granddaughter, Mary Hoefler, Littleton, Col.; also one sister, Mrs. Adolph Bremer of Utica.
