Reverend John F. Hyland, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Hyland, was born June 24, 1844, in Michelston, Ireland. After attending Eastman's College and Niagara University, he entered St. Joseph's Seminary, in Troy, where he was ordained on May 30, 1874.

Father Hyland became pastor of Annunciation Church, December 16, 1878. Father continued his priestly duties, as pastor of Ilion, for 22 years. On January 9, 1901, he was transferred to St. Francis Church, Troy, N.Y.

He died June 23, 1921 and is buried alongside his brother, Fr. Henry Hyland, in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Hamilton, Madison County.
