Ilion Receives All-Sports Trophy

ILION - Ilion High School last night received the Iroquois League All Sports Trophy during the annual "Block I" dinner in the high school gymnasium.

Joseph Sorge, athletic director, presented the trophy to Supt. George E. Anderson, who accepted the honor on behalf of the school.

The trophy is presented each year to one of the eight participating schools in the Iroquois League which has the best allaround record in sports.

Chuck Mercein, fullback for the NFL championship Green Bay Packers, was speaker.

Mercein, introduced by Werper Kleeman, football coach, discussed the need of discipline in sports and outlined his growth in football from Yale University to the New York Giants to the Green Bay Packers.

The 12 coaches on the athletic staff presented the trophies and school letters.

Trophies presented were:

Unsung Hero Trophy, Mark Andrews;
Allston Track Award, Glenn Smith;
Lever Cup, Brian Volo:
Knights of Columbus Achievement Award, John Kowalczik.

Lewis Wrestling Trophy, Jack Braren;
Rocky Cramer Memorial Award, David Murphy;
Leo Golicki Award, Joseph Costanza;
Johnson Baseball Trophy, James Bernard.
