$1,225 in Prizes Given At Ilion Commencement ILION- Prizes and scholarships totaling $1,225 were awarded last night at 1957 commencement exercises ct Ilion High School with 98 pupils receiving diplomas. Scholarship winners were Jeffrey Hopkins $500; Joanne Phillips, $300; David Letts, $200; and top money awards went to the valedictorian, James Barnes, and salutatorian, Lee Purple, who received $55 and $50, respectively.

Philip Lovejoy, Utica, spoke on "Make Way for Tomorrow." The Invocation and benediction were offered by the Rev. Daniel Horan, pastor of the Church of the Annunciation. Barnes and Miss Purple gave the valedictory and salutatory addresses entitled, "The Mayflower,Returns," and "Music in Ilion." William Hughes, president of the Board of Education and Superintendent George H. Purple, presented diplomas while Joseph A. Baker, high school principal, awarded the prizes. Robert Weiler, instrumental instructor directed the band in the processional and recessional and Arthur Dauten, music supervisor, led the Orpheua Chorus in "Halls Of Ivy." Prize Awards These prizes were awarded: Ilion National Bank and Trust Company scholarship $500, Jeffrey Hopkins; I Clark Seamans Scholarship to Syracuse University, $300, Joanne Phillips; Dr. Earl P. Watkin memorial teaching scholarship, $200, David Letts. Loretta Douglas memorial fund, English, first $10, James Barnes; 2nd, $5, Lee Purple; Mathematics four years first, $10, Frances Pavliga, 2nd, $5, James Barnes; history. three years, Cornelia Nagel prize, $5, James Barnes, American History, 11th year, $5, Folsom Selwood. Problems of Democracy, 12th year, $7, Patricia Petersen; Latin three years, first, $10, Frances Pav.iga, 2nd, $5, Donna Coriale; Spanish, two years, $5. Lee Purple, French, three years, $5, Jim Barnes. John Guy Prindle memorial prize in science, first, $10, James Barnes; 2nd, $5, Folsom Selwood; shorthand, two years, $5, Lee Purple, office practice, two years, $5, Lee Purple, Industrial Arts and vocational shop, three tears, $5, Gary Adams, mechanical drawing, 1, 2 and 3, $5, Gary Adams. Art, three years, Jeannette Currier: homemaking, three years, $5, Donna March; mathematics and science, five units, and R.P.I. medal, $10, James Barnes; 2nd, $5, Frances Pavliga; speech arts, $5, Wayne Monteau. Earl P. Watkin memorial prize valedictorian, $20, James Barnes; Veterans of Foreign Wars, salutatorian, $20, Lee Purple; Prisclla Burnham memorial prize for piano, $10, Lee Purple, Robert Kent memorial prize for music, instrumental, $5, David Letts, $5, vocal, Donna Corriale and Jeannette Currier. VFW Auxiliary improvement prize, $10, Alain Briand and $10, Joanne Denapole, Diane Monteau prize for cooperation, $10, Janice Staley; Women of the Moose prize for nurses training, $10, Mary Lou Leach.
