Honor Students in Senior Class at Ilion Announced

Virginia Allen and Mary Panarites Have Best Averages for Year

Ilion - Highest honors Ilion High School can bestow on any of its pupils were awarded yesterday to Miss Virginia Allen and Miss Mary Panarites.

Miss Allen becomes valedictorian of the class of '38 with an average of 94.6%, a mark exceeded but once before in the history of the school. Miss Panarites will be salutatorian with an average of 93.1%.

The announcements were made at the senior assembly by J. Guy Prindle. He also named eight other students making up the honor list of 10 highest averages.

The other eight honor students were Frederick Winsor 92.56, Nancy Broan, 91.65, Marion Harter, 91.54, Barbara Rudd, 92?, Mary Cole, 89.55, Leo Fake, 89.54, Gladys Eastham, 90.02, Jane Hawley, 89.93.

This year's class of 128 will be the largest but not the smartest to graduate from the local high school.

Averages of last year's honor pupils were all above 90 per cent. This year 9 of 10 are above 90. Six of last year's group averaged above 93 per cent as compared with two this year.

In explaining how averages and standings of each student was compiled from marks attained by the pupils since their first year in high school, Mr. Prindle said some of the lower averages did not represent the students' true ability.
