Diplomas Are Awarded to 67 High School Graduates at Commencement in Ilion Capitol Theater Filled with Parents, Relatives and Friends of Seniors --- Many Prizes donated by Firms Presented Ilion, June 21 - the 67 members of the class of 1927, Ilion High School, were greeted at the commencement exercises at the Capitol Theater, Tuesday night, by relatives and friends that filled it to capacity, and all were pleased to have been there, as the exercises were carried out in an excellent manner, reflecting credit on all who took part. The stage was banked with flowers and class and school colors were shown. Occupying the front seats in the orchestra were members of the class of 1927. Fitting Program The Program: Overture, "Poet and Peasant" (R. von Suppe): march, "Priests' March" from "Atbella" (Mendelssohn)., invocation, Rev. B. D. Barnes; salutatory, "Education," Robert Humphrey; "History of Morgan Street School," Margaret Ellis; "The Value of Optimism," Floyd Clark; "Motor Fuel of the Future," Raymond Barnes; "Merry Juse" (Vincent); "In the Heart of the Hills" (Kerr-Lea), Mixed Chorus; "The Relation of the Mohawk Valley to the Making of the Republic," Joseph Keyser; valedictory, "National Forensic League," Frank Getman; vocal solo, "The Serenade" ..., Ethel Stevens (with violin obligate by Elizabeth Meehan). Before the awarding of the prizes, Principal J. G. Prindle made public thanks to these donors of gold for the prizes: Alex Robinson, Remington Cash Register Works, Remington Typewriter Company, Remington Arms Company, Ilion National Bank, Manufacturers National Bank, Ilion Lodge 1444, B. F. P Elks; Ilion Lodge 531, F. & A. M.; Ilion Council 512, K. of C., and Ilion P.S.B. and Loan Association. The awards were: Best four years in English, 1. Raymond R. Barnes; 2. Frank Getman: mathematics, three years, 1. Frank Getman; 2. Marie Tillinghast: history, three years, 1. Harry Shoemaker; 2. Gladys M. Hotaling: commercial, three years, 1. Robert Humphrey; 2. Floyd Clark: language, five years, 1. Frank Getman; 2. Margaret Ellis: science, three years, 1. Joseph W. Kyser; 2. Lawrence Goodwin. The gold medal awarded for the first time, for the best work in American history, donated by the American Legion Auxiliary was presented to Frank Getman. Raymond Douglass received the award for the best work in dramatics and the Ilion Class of 1927, through its president, John Spicer, won the Stone and Luke cup for the highest class averages of the year. The baseball cup, donated by Stephenson & Mallery, was presented to Capt. William Murphy and the Harold "Boots" Lever trophy was presented for the second year to John Spicer. Gold emblems bearing "Honor I" for the members of the student body who received over 90 points were awarded to: Raymond Barnes, Margaret Ellis, Frank Getman, Mildred Harter, Dorothy Roach, Harry Shoemaker, Ernest Sitts, Joseph Smith and the John Spicer, who had 110. Superintendent of Schools Earl P. Watkin addressed those present, also the class, in which he spoke of the fine cooperation shown by parents, pupils and faculty. He spoke of the excellent record made by the school and stated indications were that next year would be a banner year. He reviewed the school work and changes that have been and are taking place in the building program. He spoke of the needs o the Ilion school which are yet to be realized. In presenting the diplomas to the class, he spoke words of wisdom and kindly advice, which could not but make and impression on those who are about to leave.
