BLOCK SCHEDULING INFORMATIONOn Wednesday, September 3rd, students in grades 7-12 will receive initial orientation concerning block scheduling, student schedules, the purpose and use of student planners, and advisement period guidelines. September 3rd will be a B-Day. Since our block schedule is a four-day alternate design, this will provide the students with an advisement period the first day of school for program orientation. During the 1997-1998 school year our daily cycle will be A, B, C, D, and classes will be 84 minutes in duration which means students will have fewer classes each day for longer periods of time. Students will meet every other day for core courses. You may refer to the time schedule, which precedes this paragraph for a graphic overview. What are the Goals? (1) Increase uninterrupted contact time with students (2) Decrease number of classes per day (3) Decrease number of students a teacher is responsible for per day (4) Decrease number of teachers a student is responsible to per day (5) Create advisement period, student activity period, curriculum development, common teacher planning period (6) To become an all Regents High School Why are we Changing? (1) To prepare students and staff to meet the new standards by giving us more focused time in classroom with students. The standards have called for increased rigor, more application, and new forms of assessments and evaluation (2) To create time for student centered lessons focusing on in-depth understanding and student application (3) To provide students the opportunity for full performance to know - to understand - to apply and use (4) To Focus on writing and reading across the curriculum (5) To create an in-school study support system for students through the advisement period Parents will have the opportunity to experience block scheduling and ask questions during the annual P.T.O. Parents' Back-to-School Night scheduled for October 8, 1997. However, if you should have any questions regarding your child's schedule, please contact the guidance counselor or classroom teacher.
