Eleanor Brennan Handwritten Family Tree

Ilion NY

St. Agnes Cemetery - Ilion NY, Brennan and Hayes Family Plot - Eleanor Brennan

The Eleanor Brennan handwritten Family Tree sheets (which were originally created in the mid 1980s) have been photographed and converted to pdf files. Aileen Carney Sweeney, Ilion NY, created the pdf files on November 11, 2012. The best way to view the files is to download them and use Adobe pdf reader to zoom in to see details. Copies of the 4 sheets (each sheet is an 8 1/2 x 11 page taped to a second 8 1/2 x 11 page) will be provided to the Herkimer County Historical Society. There are a total of 8 files, 2 each to represent each page of Elenaor's family tree. A blue pushpin delineates where the pages are joined by Scotch tape. These pdf files are being published in preliminary format and will be replaced with higher quality photographs in the near future.

Since 1998, discussions have been posted on the internet regarding the McDonough family tree. Eleanor's hand-written tree indicated that Owen and Katherine (Lavin) McDonough were the parents of one son, Peter, and five daughters: Catherine McDonough Rock, Bridget McDonough Carney, Elizabeth McDonough Brennan, Mary Elizabeth McDonough Giblin and Anne McDonough O'Hara.

Current information indicates that Mary Elizabeth McDonough Giblin, Anne McDonough O'Hara and possibly Peter McDonough may not have been the brother and sisters to Catherine, Elizabeth and Bridget as illustrated on Eleanor Brennan's family tree.

In the mid 1980s, Eleanor Brennan visited with her Ilion relatives for the purpose of gathering information she was compiling for her Family Tree. Eleanor was the daughter of John E. Brennan and Margaret Hayes Brennan of Ilion NY. Her father, John E. Brennan (1868 - 1946), was the son of Frank and Elizabeth (McDonough) Brennan. He graduated from Ilion High School and went on to be the Vice-President in charge of operations of four companies, the Remington Arms and the Remington Cash Register companies of Ilion and Remington Ammunition Works and Remington Cutlery of Bridgeport, Connecticut. John E. Brennan lived in Ilion all his life. He died in Ilion on June 15, 1946. He was survived by his wife, Margaret E. Hayes Brennan (1873 - 1948), his son Francis H. Brennan (1904-1987) and his daughter Eleanor Brennan (1907-1999). They lived at 52 John St. Ilion NY.

Eleanor's grandfather, Cornelius Hayes, was a mason who helped lay the brick work on the Remington Family Mansion in Ilion, NY. Eleanor helped annotate the photographs of the mansion which appeared in an article published by the Herkimer County Historical Society Remington Mansion, authored by Alice Curtis.

Eleanor Brennan was born and raised in Ilion, NY. She was a graduate of Ilion High School, Class of 1924, and Marymount College of Tarrytown. She never married and had no children. However, she did have a wonderful interest in her own family tree and her legacy is that she provided the fruits of her research to the descendants of the three known McDonough sisters:

Bridget McDonough (Patrick) Carney, 1820 - December 20, 1899
Catherine McDonough (Roger) Rock 1828 - 1892
Elizabeth McDonough (Francis aka Frank) Brennan 1830-1915

and for other McDonoughs that Eleanor believed were their siblings:

Mary Elizabeth McDonough (Richard Michael) Giblin, 1834 - October 30, 1913
Anne McDonough (John) O'Hara 1834
and a Peter McDonough.
