Ilion Seniors Given Honor ILION - Leo Sammon Jr., principal, today announced that four Senior students at Ilion Central High School have received letters of commendation for their performance in the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test given last spring. The commended students, Richard Albin, Suzanne Backman, Joseph Collea, and Kathleen Hoffman, were among 38,000 from approximately 17,000 high schools throughout the nation to achieve high academic standing. As a result of the annual merit scholarship competition, open to all high schools, more than 5,000 former finalists are currently enrolled in more than400 colleges and universities. Approximately 9,100 merit scholars have been appointed to date. This year's program will conclude April, 1965, with the naming of finalists, who will receive four-year merit scholarship.
