Ilion High Informative - By Suzanne Backman The students of Ilion High are really beginning to realize that the close of school is almost upon them. Not only have many organizations held final meetings, but final exams are in the very, very near future. The I.H.S. Student Council held its final meeting on Wednesday evening. Before the meeting began, Mr. William Teeter, the advisor, took the group on a tour of the finished portion of the new school. Most of the students were surprised to find that more construction has been completed than they had realized. After the "grand tour" installation of next year's Council officers was held. Dan McGrellis, outgoing president, passed the gavel to Nick Maneen, the newly-elected president. The other officers for next year are Joan Withington and Mike Braun, vice presidents; Pat Santmire, secretary; and Linda Braren, treasurer. Council also discussed their plans for the summer. This year three representatives will be sent by Council to the Student Council Leadership Workshop. Nick Maneen, Council president, and Dick Janis, next year's senior class president, will represent the seniors at the course held at the University of Buffalo. President of next year's junior class, Bill Leach, will attend the session held at the University of Rochester. The purpose of these sessions is to instruct students in how to become responsible leaders. Induction ceremonies for the Future Teachers of America were held on Tuesday evening. Guest speaker for the affair was Mr. Hobart Hiteman, who recently returned, with his family, from Greece. New officers of FTA are president, Chris Hanson; vice president, Gert Lucey; secretary, Anne Kelley; treasurer, Marge O'Connell; historian, Melinda Marley; and corresponding secretary, Barb Howald. Activitives of the FTA were brought to a close by a picnic held at Sharon Bradle's home yesterday. Ilion's varsity baseball team will face Phoenix High, a team from the Syracuse area. This game will decide the Section 3 championship title. The game will be held at Griffin Field in Liverpool. "Boots" Day will again pitch for the Bombers. The Bomber offensive will depend on him, Bob Bluett, and Tom Moreau. On Thursday evening, Ilion's athletes were honored at the Block I dinner. Awards of varsity patches and letters were made. On Tuesday evening, a special program was held for those students from Annunciation School who will attend Ilion High next year. A tour of the school was made by the students and their parents. Following that, a special panel spoke to the guests. Speakers included Mr. Leo Sammon, principal; Mr. Charles Lang, vice principal; Mrs. Vivian Wright, guidance counselor, Mr. Warren McElwain and Mrs. Ruth Derby, faculty members, advised the students on "Making A Good Start." Susan Backman, a senior; and Bill Comins, a freshman, told the students something of what they experienced in the transition from parochial to high school. From June 1 to June 4, the Junior High Senate sponsored an orientation program for sixth graders who will enter Ilion High next year.
