Ilion High Informative - By Suzanne Backman Excitement and preparation have been the passwords at Ilion High this week. First of all, the results of the "Gay Nineties" Carnival were announced. With the support of almost the whole community, this benefit realized nearly $1,600 profits. The proceeds will be added to the Watkin Scholarship Fund. Students helped in setting up the carnival and auction on Saturday. Miss Suzanne Ford and Mr. Jay Price were co-ordinators of the affair. On Wednesday afternoon, members of the Senior National Honor Society met to discuss plans for this year's induction. The ceremony will take place at a special assembly to be held on Friday, April 9, in the school gymnasiums. Also, on Wednesday evening, the Student Council met in the cafeteria. At this meeting, last minute details concerning class games, candy sale, and the special assembly held on Friday were taken care of. On Friday, April 2, a special assembly was held to "kickoff" the candy sale sponsored by Student Council. Moderated by William Miles, this assembly consisted of a panel of five foreign exchange students. Included were Popi Sueta from Argentina, who is staying in Herkimer; Jackie Jonge from Belgium, who is staying in Mohawk; Luci Meshika from Columbia; Bert Salfors from Sweden, who is living in Sauquoit; and last but not least, Hashim Makkawi from Saudi Arabia, who is living here in Ilion. The students each spoke about their lives back home and the differences and similarities with their lives here in America. The purpose of the assembly was not only to begin the candy sale, but also to inform the student body of the workings and benefits of the American Field Service program. Mrs. Forbes Mutchler, local A.F.S. president, was guest speaker. Friday evening, Ilion High's gymnasium was the scene of the traditional battle between classes. That was the night of the annual class basketball game. At 8:30, the freshmen aced the sophomores. Then at 7:30, the clash between seniors and juniors began. Before the junior-senior game a skit was presented by the Senior Class. After the games, a free dance was held in the gym in place of the teacher-chaperoned class open - houses. Expenses were shared by tha classes and Student Council. The music was furnished by the El Dorados. Today Ilion was canvassed by nearly 200 student volunteers selling Fanny Fanner candies. This candy sale was sponsored by Student Council in order to raise funds to finance a foreign exchange student again next year. The sale began at 2 o'clock and continued until 6 o'clock. The co-chairmen of the sale were Mary McGrath and Kathy Hoffman.
