Ilion High Informative - By Suzanne Backman

Ilion High School's varsity basketball team will face the cagers from Utica Free Academy in Ilion's first sectional battle. The Class A game will begin at 8:30 as the second game in a double-header to be held at Mohawk Valley Community College. Ilion will again depend on the scoring of Boots Day and Bob DeMartine.

On Wednesday evening, March 3, the Ilion Student Council held its weekly meeting in the school cafeteria. Definite plans concerning the candy sale were announced. This sale, to produce funds in order to sponsor a foreign exchange student next year, will begin on April 2.

Mark Reardon, president of Herkimer High School's Student Council, was a guest at this meeting. Mark explained to the members how Herkimer's Candy Sale was run and the results. He also described the manner in which Herkimer's Student Council conducted some of its business. Questions were raised by Ilion members.

Also on Wednesday, two assemblies were presented by the Ilion Gymnastic Team under their advisor, Mr. Murphy. The team presented an assembly to the senior high students at 11:15 and to the junior high at 12:15. In this program, the boys demonstrated many of the routines they use in various competitions and also other procedures of varying difficulty.

Yesterday, March 5, the seniors of Ilion attended a special assembly at which the workings of Social Security were explained. As many of the students knew little of Social Security, the assembly presented by Mr. Brady proved to be most informative and important.

On Friday, the Senior National Honor Society met after school. The group discussed plans for the induction of new members to be held on April 2. The annual dramatic presentation, sponsored by the Honor Society, was also discussed. On Wednesday, March 10, the group will sponsor a bake sale to be held during the morning break.

This weekend, Mohammed Hashim Makkawi, Ilion's exchange student from Saudi Arabia, is attending the International Weekend in Herkimer. Along with students from 14 other countries, Hashim arrived at Herkimer yesterday. The weekend includes an assembly, dinners, a Sports Night, and a party.

The International Weekend will be climaxed by a dinner given by the Rotary Club in the General Herkimer Hotel and a tea given by the Herkimer Chapter of the American Association of University Women.
