Ilion High Informative - By Elaine Mutchler

The future of 24 aspiring politicians was decided yesterday as the polls opened for balloting in Student Council primary elections.

Last week the juniors met to select four students each for president and treasurer of Council. They also nominated one student to the other offices. Since the vice president comes from the sophomore class, it nominated four for that office and one for each of the other three offices. The freshman class was allowed to nominate four candidates for secretary, and one candidate each for the other offices.

The executive committee of Student Council divided the Gold and Brown Parties. The candidates of the Brown Party are: Bob Schneider, Bill Cornell and Greg Patrei, president; vice president, Carla Braun, Nancy Whitney, and Nick Maneen; secretary, Peggy Getman, Pat Cirillo. Jean Maury; treasurer, Linda Kroll, Linda Brown, and Owen Roberts. Co - chairman Paul Morris and Linda Caple are managing the campaign.

Gold Party candidates are: president. Dan McGrellis. Bob Bluett and Mary Jean McGrath; vice president, Larry Hollar, Betsy Morris, John Wainwright; Secretary, Joan Withington, Mary Carney, and Bill Leach; Treasurer, Sandy Santmire, Susan Getman, and Joanne Urtz. Campaign co-chairman are Tom Morris and Charlie Bennett.

Congratulations to Rick Albin, Bob Schneider, Bill Cornell, Bob Bluett and Joe Short who have been selected as representatives of Ilion High School at Boy’s State this summer at Colgate University.

The classes of Jay Price had a very pleasant break from normal classroom activity last Wednesday when they were both entertained and instructed by folksingers, Mr. and Mrs. Joel Abbott from Colgate University. The Abbotts' program consisted of a lecture on the History and Styles of Balladry and a number of 15th century folk ballads to illustrate their talk.

Cheerleading tryouts got under way last w eek with 80 freshman, sophomores, and juniors signingup. Varsity and Junior Varsity squads for next year will be selected on Tuesday by Donald Keddell, Charlie Bennett, and five members of the faculty.

Last Saturday, April 25, Ilion's track team captured the Class B Section 3 Relay title at the Rome Free Academy Stadium. Two records were broken by the team as they sped to their winning total of 17 points. Terry Sweeney, Paul Dodge, Jim Yule and Pat Rapenske set a new record for the Emile course when they breezed home in a time of 19:31. A new record for the 2-mile run was established when Charlie Bennett, Tom Morris, Dave Tresholavy, and JackSweeney came home in 8:46.1. This is the second year in a row that Ilion has captured this title.

Out of approximately 157 students in the class of 1964, 103 plan to continue their education, Theresa Jones, Ilion's candidate for the Herkimer County Teachers’ Association Scholarship placed as the first alternate for the award. Congratulations!
