The 35th annual honors dinner was held to honor senior members of the IHS Class of 2009. These students were honored for earning outstanding scholastic records and achievements during their high school careers. Each of these students attained a final average of 90 percent or better. (June 6, 2008) Angela Verenich is the 2008 Valedictorian. Verenich's years at Ilion High School have been filled with significant accomplishments in both her scholastic endeavors and extra-curricular activities. Verenich is an outstanding student whose academic efforts have earned her membership in both the National Junior Honor Society and Senior National Honor Society. She has been on the high honor roll each quarter of high school and has received the Honor I award each year. In her junior year, she was awarded the CANY Merit Award from Alfred University for outstanding academic achievement in math and science. She has balanced her scholastic endeavors with a variety of extra-curricular activities. She participated in the Regional Program for Excellence throughout her senior year where she was able to explore her future aspirations of a career in fashion. She has also been involved in Newspaper Club, Yearbook Club, Art Club and Spanish Club, as well as playing on Ilion's volleyball team. In the fall, Verenich plans on attending HCCC for fashion merchandising. Upon completion of her Associate's degree from HCCC, she plans on transferring to Cazenovia College to work towards her Bachelor's degree. Erin Sweeney is the 2008 Salutatorian. Erin is the daughter of Aileen Carney Sweeney IHS '74, grand-daughter of Dr. Theodore Carney IHS '36 and great grand niece of Anna Carney, IHS Valedictorian 1908. During Sweeney's years at Ilion High School, she has distinguished herself in both the classroom and extra-curricular activities. She is first and foremost an excellent student. Since beginning high school, she has been on the high honor roll each quarter and has earned the Honor I Award each year. She has been selected for membership in the National Junior Honor Society and the Senior National Honor Society. This year she is enrolled in advanced placement English, biology and calculus. In her junior year, she was awarded the Frederick Douuglas and Susan B. Anthony Award in Humanities and Social Sciences from the University of Rochester for her outstanding academic achievement. Sweeney has balanced her scholastic endeavors with a variety of extra-curricular activities. She has participated at the highest level in Ilion's athletic program as a team player and asset to the field hockey, volleyball, and softball teams. She hasfurther been an active participant in Ilion's music program by participating in chamber choir, chamber singers, chorus, Drama Club and NYSSMA Solo Festival. Sweeney further chose to take on leadership roles while in high school by serving on Student Council, as well as being a member of Spanish Club and the Newspaper Club. Next year, she plans on attending SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forrestry/Syracuse University and will be majoring in biotechnology. Top Scholars of the IHS Class of 2007 ....The 33rd annual honors dinner was held to honor senior members of the IHS Class of 2007. These students were honored for earning outstanding scholastic records and achievements during their high school careers. Each of these students attained a final average of 90 percent or better. (June 2, 2007) Keith Willner is the 2007 valedictorian. Willner has been accepted at Hamilton College where he plans to major in Bio-Chemistry.
Mary Morse is the salutatorian for the class of 2007. Morse has been accepted at Worcester Polytechnic Institute where she plans to major in Molecular Biology.

Top Scholars of the IHS Class of 2006 ....Ilion High School Principal, Renee Rudd, has announced the "Top Scholars" for the Class of 2006 at Ilion High School. Each of these students attained a final average of 90 per cent or better. Rachel Bigelow is the 2006 valedictorian. Bigelow's academic efforts have earned her membership in both the Junior Honor Society and Senior National Honor Society. She has been on the high honor roll each quarter of high school and has received the Honor I award each year. This year, she is enrolled in Advanced Placement Calculus and English. In her junior year, she was awarded the Humanities and Social Science Award from the University of Rochester for outstanding academic achievement. Bigelow has balanced her scholastic endeavors with a variety of extracurricular activities. She has participated at the highest level in Ilion's athletic program, including soccer, volleyball and track. She has further been a great talent to Ilion's musical program and has actively participated in concert band, all-county band, marching band, woodwind ensemble, flute quartet, as well as being a part of the high school musical. Bigelow has further taken on leadership roles in school by serving as both president and treasurer of Key Club and as the Class of 2006 treasurer for the past four years. She has been accepted to Hamilton College in the fall where she plans to major in government.
Christopher Maley is the salutatorian for the class of 2006. Maley has distinguished himself in both the classroom and extracurricular activities. Since beginning high school, he has been on the high honor roll each quarter and has
earned the Honor I Award each year. He has been selected for membership in both the National Junior Honor Society and the Senior National Honor Society. This year, Maley is enrolled in Advanced Placement Calculus and English. In his junior year, he was awarded the RIT Computing Award for outstanding achievement in science and
math. Maley has also been involved in a variety of extracurricular activities. He has participated at the highest level of the athletic program as a team player and great asset to the basketball, baseball and football teams at IHS. He has further taken on leadership roles in school by serving on Student Council since his freshman year, as well as participating in Spanish Club, Math Club, Drama Club, Youth Summit and National Honor Society. He plans on attending Clarkson University, where he will major in engineering. (July 11, 2006)

These students were honored for earning outstanding scholastic records and achievements during their high school careers. Each of these students attained a final average of 90 percent or better. Christina Kucerak is the 2005 valedictorian. Kucerak has been accepted to the Rochester Institute of Technology where she will study Imaging Science.

Donna Thibault '97, a May 2001 Rochester Institute of Technology, Biotechnology graduate is now in the first year of a Ph.D. program in Immunology at Stanford University. Donna was selected to receive a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. This is the most prestigious fellowship awarded new graduate students in doctoral programs. Donna is featured in the RIT Biological Sciences Department On-Line Newsletter. (May 14, 2002)

Top Scholars of the IHS Class of 2001 ....The 27th annual honors dinner will be held next week to honor senior members of the IHS Class of 2001. These students will be honored for earning outstanding scholastic records and achievements during their high school careers. Alison Haefele is the 2001 valedictorian. She is the daughter of Roberta Carney Haefele (IHS 1971) and John Haefele. Congratulations to my niece, Alison Haefele. We are all so proud of her. Andrew Zvirzdin is the salutatorian for the class of 2001. Andrew is the son of Joseph and Catherine Zvirzdin. Andrew starred as Professor Harold Hill in the March 2001, Ilion Junior-Senior High production of "The Music Man". (March 21, 2001)
Mark Tennant '78 was selected by the New York College Learning Skills Association as the recipient of its annual award for "Outstanding Student Graduate of a Developmental Program." Mark was recoginized for his exemplary achievement as a student who began his college studies with developmental course(s) and continued to excel in his chosen program of study, showing outstanding promise in his planned career field. He will graduate in May with a degree as an occupational therapy assistant. (May 4, 2000)
The 26th annual honors dinner was recently held to honor senior members of the IHS Class of 2000. FIFTY-SEVEN seniors were honored for earning outstanding scholastic records and achievements during their high school careers. The guest speaker, at the dinner, was Thaddeus Luke, a former Ilion High School graduate. Mr. Luke is currently the principal law clerk for the combined Courts of Herkimer County. Sara Korol is the 2000 valedictorian. She is the daughter of Theresa Korol. Kathryn Adams is the salutatorian for the class of 2000. Katie is the daughter of Richard and Annemarie Adams.
