Condolences.....Marie Cunningham, age 73, Second St, Ilion, passed away Saturday, September 15, 2001, in Faxton hospital after a long battle with cancer. She was born October 14, 1927 in Brooklyn, NY. She was a graduate of Camden High and Suny Oswego in 1950. On July 7, 1956, she married Francis Cunningham, in Williamstown, NY. She was employed as an elementary school teacher in Williamson, NY and in Ilion's North Street School. She is survived by her husband, Francis, two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Ann Cunningham of Irondaquoit, NY , and Michael and Jan Cunningham, of Rochester; three daugheters and a son-in-law, Mary Kathleen Cunningham and Patricia Cunningham, both of Tualatin, OR, and Elizabeth and Philip Welch, of Pittsford, NY; and four grandchildren, Taryn and Bridget Welch, and Abbey and John Cunningham. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, September 18, 2001 at 10 am in the Church of the Annunciation in Ilion. Interment will follow in the Mohawk Cemetery. Friends may call Monday from 6-9pm at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, Ilion. Memorials in Marie's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society. (September 16, 2001) William F. Murphy, age 81, East Herkimer, passed away Tuesday, July 31, 2001, in Folts Homes. He was born Aug. 27, 1919, in Buffalo, the son of the late Frank and May (Wright) Murphy. In 1946, he married the former Caroline Maltzahn in Kenmore. Mr. Murphy was a veteran of World War II, where he served for nearly five years with 102nd Coast Artillery Anti-Aircraft Battalion from Buffalo, including over three years in the South Pacific. After his military service, William attended Brockport State Teachers College, where he graduated in 1950. Mr. Murphy taught physical education and general science, as well as coaching gymnastics and football. His teaching career started in Altona, then Middleburgh and finally Ilion, where he retired in 1978. Mr. Murphy's special interest was amateur bicycle racing, which he competed in before the war, and after his retirement he again competed as a master class rider. William is survived by his wife of 54 years, Caroline of East Herkimer and his daughter, Deborah Lahey of Utica. A memorial service for Mr. Murphy will be held Sunday, Aug. 5, at 2:30 p.m. in the Ilion Baptist Church. The Rev. Harry Teuchert will officiate. Cremation will take place at the Chenango Valley Crematory, Earlville. In keeping with Mr. Murphy's wishes there are no calling hours. Arrangements are with the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home in Ilion. (August 2, 2001) M. Elizabeth Ward, age 98, Arlington, Va., formerly of Ilion, a retired Ilion school teacher, died Friday, May 4, at the Jefferson Nursing Home, Arlington, Va. The event is sponsored by 29 Area School Districts (including Ilion Central School Distric) and 3 BOCES Districts. Candidates may interview for current or future teaching vacancies. Section III Wrestling inducted Bob Turley into its Hall of Fame. Mr. Turley, Ilion's athletic director, was inducted along with former Whitesboro coach Jerry LaMonica. Bob and Jerry became the 35th and 36th inductees joining an impressive list of coaches in the wrestling hall. The Golden Bombers won almost 75 percent of their matches during the 22 years that Bob was their wrestling coach. He led Ilion to one Class B championship, 12 league titles, and had two wrestlers achieve 100 wins in their career (Jeff Noll and Tim Hyer). He finished with 208 career wins. Seven Golden Bombers reached the Section III finals under his direction with Tim Hyer advancing to the state meet in 1977 and 78. Current Ilion wrestling coach, Bob Bush, presented Mr. Turley with the plaque honoring his achievements. (Feb 26, 2001)
Condolences.....Joseph S. Sorge, IHS Director of Physical Education and Athletics, age 74, of Ilion, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, unexpectedly at his home. He was born in Silver Creek, N.Y., Feb. 11, 1926, to Charles and Francesca Leone Sorge. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a graduate of SUNY College at Brockport, class of 1950, with a degree in health and physical education and then attended SUNY-Cortland and received a certificate as director of health, physical education and recreation. While employed with the Ilion school system in 1953, Joe met and married Rose Mary Tyburski. She died March 22, 1995. In 1992, Mr. Sorge was inducted into the SUNY Brockport Hall of Fame. Mr. Sorge had an extensive career in scholastic athletics, some of the highlights of which include: a member of the SUNY-Brockport varsity basketball team, 1947-50; co-captain during the 1949-50 season; Most Valuable Player, 1949-50; a member of the varsity track and field team, 1948-49; set records in 100-yard dash, shot put and javelin; and was undefeated in the 100-yard dash in collegiate competition. He was employed as the director of physical education and athletics at Ilion Central School from 1960-1972; districtwide director of physical education and athletics at Utica City schools from 1972 until his retirement in 1985; he coached champions in cross country, track and field and basketball; established Section III Football Championships; Section III representative to both NYSPHSSA Central Committee for Athletic Directors and Executive Committee. As a Rotarian, chaired a committee which honored outstanding educators in seven school districts; president of Herkimer County Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) and Board of Education; president of the Greater Utica Sports Hall of Fame Committee; first vice-president of the Oneida-Madison-Herkimer Counties Board of Education. His survivors include his three sons, John Sorge of Ilion, Kevin Sorge of Ilion and Christopher Sorge of Branford, Conn.; a daughter and her husband, Joanne and Bill Iman of Clinton; a sister, Etta Mayles of California and a sister-in-law, Louise Sorge of Silver Creek. He also leaves a granddaughter, Sarah of Utica. He was predeceased by his brothers, Vincent and Gerald Sorge. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be held Saturday morning at 10 at the Church of the Annunciation, Ilion. Burial will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery.
