Mary V. Byrne, IHS Faculty Member, 71, of Watertown passed away at Samaritan Medical Center on Saturday, June 18. Born Sept. 28, 1939, in Syracuse, the daughter of the late John Patrick and Louise "Cookie" Byrne, Mary grew up in Watertown, graduated from Watertown High School, and earned her bachelor’s degree from SUNY Cortland in 1961. |
She taught Phys Ed in the Illion School System for more than 30 years and coached tennis, softball, volleyball, basketball, and track. She valued the friendship of her colleagues and coordinated countless retiree roasts throughout her tenure to keep them smiling. |
Mame's sense of humor was legendary. On Halloween she once dressed in 1940s attire in her chosen original character of "Fern Baggs" (of the “Baggs Corners Baggs”). Accompanied by her similarly-clad sister, Sheila (as Pearl Baggs), she met with Watertown city officials to express concerns about rumored development near their "namesake" crossroads. Never breaking character and donning her "signature piece" (an artificial fern affixed prominently to her lapel), the pair also visited a Watertown car dealer looking for "nothing newer than a 1950 model". Mary pioneered the "Do Not Call List" by turning the tables on telemarketers by attempting to sell them wares of her own, including "a very fine, not knotty pine, but gen-u-ine Birdseye Maple chifferobe." She wrote many limericks for colleagues, friends and family, and brought laughs to many with her hilarious impressions ranging from a clucking chicken to Pres. George W. Bush. She was an especially dedicated daughter, returning from Herkimer to Watertown to care for her mother on weekends for many years. In retirement, she enjoyed golfing at Watertown Golf Club, participating in the Watertown Irish Festival, and traveling widely to enjoy the music of the Irish Tenors. Firm in her Catholic faith, Mary was a communicant of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and a longtime, active member of the choir. She was also an avid volunteer, sharing her time, faith, and compassion with residents of Henry Keep Home whenever she was able. Mary was predeceased by her parents and a brother, John. She is survived by her beloved sister, Shiela (Donald) Curtis, of Watertown, her dear brother, Dennis (Mary Jane) Byrne of Norfolk, four nieces, Erin McGuire, Julie Byrne, Kathy Curtis, and Kelly Byrne and three nephews, Mark Curtis, Sean Byrne, and John Byrne. Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 20, at D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. A prayer service will be held at 9:15 a.m. at the funeral home with a 10 a.m. funeral Mass at St. Patrick’s Church with Rev,. Donald Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery. Contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Judes Place, Memphis, TN 38105. (July 9, 2011)

Arthur Dauten, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, ended his long journey on this earth on May 26, 2011, at the age of 97. Arthur was born in Tottenham, England, on August 20, 1913, to the late Ludwig and Annie (North) Dauten. In the aftermath of WW I, the family moved from England to Lubeck, Germany, when Arthur was about 8 years old, and finally his family immigrated to the United States in 1925, when Arthur was just 12 years old. Arthur lived much of his working life in upstate NY and retired from teaching to Ocala in 1976. Arthur was very talented in the arts and graduated from Boston University’s College of Music in 1938. Later, after serving in WW II, he received his Masters from Syracuse University. He also attended Carnegie Tech, where he received fine training in Theatre. Arthur married Eleanor Greenizen in 1944. Their first daughter, Pamela, was born in 1946 and twelve years later came their second child, Dorothy. Arthur and Eleanor both shared the love of music, Eleanor was naturally gifted and played the piano by ear since the age of 3, while Arthur was a trained musician blessed with a beautiful voice; he sang at many weddings of friends and family over the years and was an exceptional teacher. He taught music at Ilion High School from 1951-1961 and served on the Ilion High School Board of Education in the late 1960’s. His fondest and most accomplished years were spent at Ilion High School, where he put on several successful musical productions, most memorable, Gilbert and Sullivan’s "H & S Pinafore", and "Babes in Toyland". During his tenure, he formed and directed the "11 Belles", a select group of high school girls who performed concerts throughout Ilion and the Mohawk Valley. A group of these same students honored him back in 2004, when Arthur was 90. "The Belles" had such fond memories of him as a teach, so fond, in fact, that many kept in touch with him over the years; "The Belles" will always remember Mr. Dauten for instilling in them a love of music that has carried throughout their lives. "The fact that he appreciated music and taught us to appreciate music made us proud," said former "Belle", Janet Darling. Another former "Belle", Carol Hancock, said that "he ingrained confidence in group members and brought out their best with his kindness and ability to communicate his passion for music". Connie Burrell said, " he was so inspiring. He got all the talent out of everyone he possibly could. To this day we carry the love of music he taught us". He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Eleanor Dauten, in 1991; as well as his parents, Ludwig and Annie Dauten; sister, Emily; and brother, Frederick. He is survived by his two daughters, Pamela Turnley (W. Gary) and Dorothy Pohleven, both of Ocala, Florida; as well as three grandchildren, one great-grandson, and several nephews and nieces. Cremation has taken place and Arthur will be laid to rest alongside his wife at Dexter Cemetery, Town of Brownville, N.Y., later in the year. A Memorial Service, in honor of Arthur’s life, will take place on Saturday, June 4, 2011, at 2:00 PM at Coventry Episcopal Church, 20 SW 87th Place, (Corner of CR 475 & 312), Ocala, FL 34476 and a future memorial is planned in the fall near Ilion, N.Y.
